GENEVA – Hundreds of people – couples, small children on their parents’ shoulders, teens, elders with canes and wheelchairs – jam-packed Geneva’s Third Street from the courthouse lawn to the stage where Mayor Kevin Burns accepted the first candy cane of the season, welcomed Santa Lucia and Santa Claus and lit the Great Tree.
“Now ladies and gentlemen, this tree has more than 4,000 lights, several thousand decorations, all provided by school kids throughout Geneva,” Burns said. “It’s important that we do the countdown loud and clear. And we’re going to start the countdown from 75.”
The crowd groaned and murmured, “Noooo.”
