The holidays are around the corner and so is winter break for most students in our library district.
Here at the St. Charles Public Library, we kick up our programs just in time. Beginning Dec. 20 and running through Jan. 31, families can enroll in the Family Read-Aloud Book Club, which encourages lifelong literacy and motivates families to share reading aloud as a daily tradition. What better way to spend a cozy evening than sharing a great story with your loved ones.
Families record the time spent reading aloud and then collect the rewards at the library. Rewards include books dedicated to the family, autographed children’s books, certificates to local businesses and canvas book bags. We thank Chili’s, Colonial Cafe, Fox Valley Ice Arena, Heinz Brothers Greenhouse Garden Center, and Trellis Farm & Garden for their generosity in participating as sponsors. Families can register for the book club at the “ASK ME” desk in our children’s department.
There are many enriching and fun events scheduled, including Family Game Time, a New Year’s Eve Celebration with Circus Boy, a stuffed animal sleepover and various story times! Visit our website at www.scpld.org/kids for all of our children and family events.
Sharing your joy with others
This year, the library is partnering with several local agencies to be a host and/or a collection site for donations. Through Dec. 23, patrons can donate new, unwrapped toys at the library to benefit Becca’s LEGacy. This organization will give the donations to local hospitals to give to children diagnosed with cancer.
Through Dec. 29, patrons can give a monetary donation for “Good Books for a Good Cause,” which goes to buy books for the Illinois Youth Center.
Finally, patrons are able to buy wrapped books to benefit the Friends of the St. Charles Public Library.
There are many opportunities to enhance the season of giving, and we hope that you consider these efforts.
The St. Charles Public Library will be closed:
• Sunday, Dec. 24
• Monday, Dec. 25
• Monday, Jan. 1
Don’t forget that you can visit the library online, especially on the days that the physical building is closed.
Edith Craig is director of the St. Charles Public Library District. The “Discover Your Library” column runs the second Thursday of each month. Feedback can be sent to email@example.com.
