A Kane County jail detainee who was being treated at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva on May 13 got a handgun away from his guard.
The detainee, Tywon M. Salters, 21, of Chicago, took one nurse hostage, released her and took a second nurse hostage.
After an hours-long standoff, a police SWAT team broke in and fatally shot Salters
in the left side of his head.
Four nurses and two of their husbands filed suit in federal court against Kane County, a Kane County jail corrections officer and a hospital security company.
The lawsuit asserted, among other things, that the three defendants violated their duty to protect the nurses at Delnor.
At a press conference, attorneys for the nurses stated that a nurse was repeatedly beaten and raped until the SWAT team shot Salters.
The defendants have asked a federal judge to dismiss the case filed against them.
The case's next status hearing is set for April 5, 2018.
