Newsmaker of the Year: Al Markus passes away

Sugar Grove Corn Boil volunteer Al Markus, 67, was well known in the community for the work he'd done for the village. He was even named Sugar Grove's Citizen of the Year in 2017.

Markus passed away Oct. 15. His wife, Donna, who was also involved with the Corn Boil, passed away in 2012.

Markus was the head of the Facilities Committee for the Corn Boil, where he oversaw equipment, ordering materials and installing signs, in addition to other responsibilities.

Beyond helping with the Corn Boil, Markus also helped bring Christmas joy to the village as Markus assisted with the decoration of the village's Christmas tree.

A ceremony remembering Markus occurred in front of the village's Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving, when the official tree lighting also took place, which is fitting as Markus was partially responsible for getting the tree's lights installed the previous two years.
