BATAVIA – The city of Batavia announced that its employees' personal and financial information was compromised through an email phishing of 2017 W-2 tax forms the morning of Jan. 31.
The information includes names, Social Security numbers, addresses and earnings, according to a news release. It stated that the city alerted employees immediately and is taking actions to limit the potential risk from the theft of the information.
The phishing attack affects several hundred employees, councilman and others receiving W-2 forms from the city of Batavia, which is conducting meetings to inform employees of its actions and provide any additional information for protection of personal information and accounts.
Batavia police are investigating and city employees are being counseled by the administration on steps being taken to protect identity and financial security.
