Batavia drive-thru reported scene of shooting

Hospital staff alert police to man's injury

BATAVIA – A man being treated for an apparent gunshot wound told police Feb. 20 that he was shot in the drive-thru lane at the Steak 'n Shake restaurant located at 1901 McKee St., Batavia, according to a Batavia Police Department news release.

The patient said that while he was parked in the drive-thru, there was a verbal altercation between the passengers in his vehicle and an occupant of a car from which someone then fired numerous shots, striking him once, according to the release.

Police were alerted to the incident by staff at a local hospital where the man sought treatment, the release stated.

Investigation of the scene, which began at about 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, indicated that the alleged shooter was in a red sedan that lost control while trying to drive away and struck an unoccupied, parked car before exiting the lot, according to the release. It noted the car is thought to have moderate damage to the front passenger bumper and fender from the collision.

The offender was described in the report as possibly being an African American of unknown age, and perhaps bearded. It is unclear if there were other occupants in the sedan, and the investigation is continuing, police said.

The restaurant has reopened, the release stated.
