Woman escapes grandma scam seeking cash

Detectives advise St. Charles Township resident to monitor accounts for unauthorized activity

ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A resident in the 04N100 block of Thornly Road, St. Charles Township, reported an attempted fraud Feb. 28 in which a caller claimed to be her grandson and needing money, according to Kane County Sheriff’s reports.

The resident said the caller claimed to have been in a car accident in which he had been drinking and hit a pregnant woman, the report stated.

The caller told the resident he was in Ohio and needed $4,000 to post bond and to pay for a public defender, the report stated.

The woman was advised to go to a bank, get the cash and put it in a white legal-sized envelope and send the money, the report stated.

But after the woman spoke to another family member, she was advised that her grandson was at work and not in any accident in Ohio – so she contacted the sheriff’s office, reports stated.

Detectives advised her to monitor all her accounts for unauthorized activity.
