Social media message leads to $350 loss in Kane County

Woman reports theft by deception

BLACKBERRY TOWNSHIP – A resident in the 0N600 block of West Weaver Circle, Blackberry Township, reported being a victim of theft by deception, according to Kane County Sheriff’s reports.

The resident reported that on March 24, she had given an unknown person $350 in iTunes gift cards under the impression that an offer was coming from a good friend, reports stated.

She had received several Facebook messages from an account she thought belonged to her friend. The messages said she would get a cash prize that would “change her life,” but she had to pay $960 to process the winnings and claim the prize, reports stated.

She bought $350 in iTunes gift cards and provided the numbers as told, reports stated.

Then she attempted to wire the rest of the money but Walgreens denied the transfer because employees thought she was being scammed, reports stated.

"That is when she realized it was a hoax … she told the individual contacting her to stop and to return the money", reports stated.
