ST. CHARLES – A St. Charles police officer was involved in a vehicle crash while on duty on April 17, according to a news release.

The officer was on patrol southbound on Kirk Road when the officer observed a vehicle traveling northbound at a high rate of speed, the release stated.

The officer turned around at Stern Avenue and went northbound, activating his emergency overhead lights. As the officer approached the intersection with Ohio Avenue, the driver, identified as Eugenio Hernandez, 38, of West Chicago, turned left, going eastbound, in front of the squad car, which was traveling through the intersection with the green light, the release stated.

Both the officer and the driver were taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital for treatment with minor injuries and have been released, the release stated.

The Illinois State Police conducted the crash investigation with assistance from St. Charles officers. Hernandez was charged with driving with a suspended/revoked driver's license, failure to yield while turning left at an intersection and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, the release stated.
