“I also did some acting camp stuff and things like that but hadn’t done any big productions until I came here,” she said. “I really enjoy it. No matter how hard my day is going at school I know when I get to the musical it feels like any weight has been lifted off of me. I love coming here and meeting people in other grades and making new friends.”
The setting of the play is the 1930s with some parts in New York and the rest in small town Nevada with music by George Gershwin.
“It’s all Gershwin, all jazz,” Staker said. “It’s kind of like a Gershwin revue with music from the '20s and '30s.”
There were 95 kids who auditioned for the musical with 60 being chosen to participate. The number of kids who tried out was down from 110 and 120 respectively the past two years, but a lot of that probably had to due with the school offering Disney productions.
