Aurora man, 39, dies while walking along Fox River in North Aurora

Police, coroner probe death of man found in river

NORTH AURORA – A 39-year-old Aurora man was pronounced dead May 27 after being found face down in the Fox River near State Street in North Aurora, police announced in a news release.

The man was later identified as Edward A. Poe, whose last known address was in the 800 block of Gillette Avenue, Aurora, the release stated.

Poe’s death remains under investigation by North Aurora police and the Kane County Coroner’s Office.

The incident started with an emergency call at 5:06 p.m. that a man was face down in the river. Because the caller did not specify the location or which side of the river, officers checked both sides, the release stated.

Officers located the caller and Poe, about a quarter of a mile north of the North Aurora dam and about 25 yards off of the Fox River’s east bank, the release stated.

Officers learned that Poe was walking on the trail with the female caller, when Poe was believed to have suffered an unknown medical event and then fell into the river.

As Poe was unresponsive, officers performed CPR until the North Aurora Fire Protection District paramedics arrived. They transported Poe to Presence Mercy Center in Aurora where he was later pronounced deceased, the release stated.

Anyone with information should call the Investigations Division at 630-897-8705, ext. 610. Anonymous tips may be left at the same number, but by choosing option 3.
