MOOSEHEART – The Illinois Civic Mission Coalition has recognized Mooseheart High School as an Illinois Democracy School.
It’s designed to provide students authentic experiences in the rights, responsibilities and tensions inherent in living in a democracy, a news release stated. Participating schools facilitate discussions of current and controversial issues, and offer democratic simulations and service learning opportunities.
Seventy-five Illinois high schools successfully have completed a schoolwide civic assessment to be recognized in the program, the release stated.
“We commend Mooseheart High School for their tenacity and enthusiasm in expanding and improving civic learning across the curriculum and throughout Illinois,” Sonia Mathew, civic learning manager at the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, stated in the release. “Through these practices and experiences, students see firsthand the critical role they play in shaping government and society.”
Mooseheart High School will receive a stipend from the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, which convenes the ICMC, to continue program initiatives, and will get a new banner for display.
