Wanted: Big truck enthusiasts and future track stars

ST. CHARLES – Parents, and kids, won’t want to miss out on some free fun and photo opportunities this September during two annual events held by the St. Charles Park District.

From 10am-12pm on Saturday, September 8, the east parking lot in James O. Breen Community Park will be filled with every type of heavy-duty vehicle little boys and girls can imagine during the free Big Truck Show.

The vehicles expected during this free event include a garbage truck, crane, cement mixer, fire truck, bus, St. Charles police cars, construction truck and snow plow.

Not only will children be able to see these big trucks, they will be able to touch their little hands on the enormous tires, climb into the driver’s seat and pretend to steer, and take an unlimited amount of photos up close.

Questions are encouraged and representatives of the trucks will be on hand to explain their different uses and what makes them unique. Sponsors will also be onsite with giveaways and information.

“It’s a nice outdoor activity for kids to get up close and personal with trucks they normally wouldn’t be able to,” said Katie Miller, Assistant Superintendent of Recreation.

James O. Breen Community Park is located at Campton Hills Road and Peck Road, St. Charles. For more information, call Katie Miller at 630-513-4390.

While trucks will steal the show of youngsters on September 8, the next weekend children can become athletes – future track stars, that is – during the Tiny Tots Track Meet at 10am on Saturday, September 15 at the East Side Sports Complex, 3565 Legacy Blvd., St. Charles.

The event for boys and girls, ages 3 to 7, will participate in four running races across the width of a basketball court. The first three winners of each race will receive a ribbon, but all participants will go home with a medal.

Parents and/or older siblings also can lace up their running shoes to compete with participants in a fifth race.

Then, these future track stars will compete in shot put using a tennis ball and perform their best long jump into the sand volleyball courts.

“This event shows young kids that being active can be fun,” said Megan Hatheway, Park District Athletic Supervisor. “Kids can have fun with their family and get into the spirit of some friendly competition.”

The rain date is September 22. The fee is $12 for residents and $18 for nonresidents. Register online for this special event at www.stcparks.org/register. For more information, call Megan Hatheway at 630-513-4336.
