KANEVILLE – An Aurora woman was charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence in causing an accident that broke the neck of the other driver, court and Kane County Sheriff’s records show.
Gigiola V. Akin, 28, of the 200 block of South Lincoln Avenue, Aurora, also was charged Aug. 18 with disobeying a stop sign and speeding 50 mph in a 30-mph zone.
According to court and police records, Akin was intoxicated by a combination of alcohol, cocaine and marijuana while driving a 2013 Dodge Avenger at 11:15 a.m. north on Dauberman Road.
Akin allegedly drove through the stop sign at Dauberman and Keslinger roads, striking a Ford F450 truck pulling a trailer traveling east on Keslinger and resulting “in a crash that caused great bodily harm – a broken neck – to the victim,” court and police records state.
Akin was “under the influence of alcohol, other drug or drugs … to a degree that rendered the defendant incapable of driving safely,” according to the charging document.
Akin had to be freed from her vehicle, reports stated. Both Akin and the injured driver were taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, reports stated.
Akin had a bottle of Modelo beer in her lap and deputies found another bottle in a ditch 10 feet from her vehicle, reports stated.
Akin told police she had been drinking all night, reports stated.
Because Akin refused to submit to breathalyzer and other tests and she was involved in a crash resulting in serious injury, her license will be suspended for a minimum of 12 months, the report stated.
Akin’s speeding citation was issued by Montgomery police, westbound on Montgomery Road, an eighth of a mile east of South Broadway, reports stated.
Akin posted $1,500 bail or 10 percent of the $15,000 bond that was set. Akin is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14.
