Families to learn about fire safety skills

Batavia station hosts open house on Oct. 14

BATAVIA – The Batavia Fire Department is hosting a family-friendly open house focusing on how to escape safely from a home fire.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 14 at Batavia Fire Station 2, 1400 Main St., near Batavia High School. It is being hosted as a part of national Fire Prevention Week, and this year’s theme is “Look, Listen, Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.”

Visitors to the open house will learn about three basic steps that people should take in order to quickly and safely escape from a home fire, said Batavia fire Battalion Chief John Lucas.

These steps include:

Look for places a fire could start. Listen for the sound of the smoke alarm. Learn two ways out of every room.

The event will include an opening ceremony at 11:15 a.m.

Activities will feature tours of the fire station, including vehicles operated by both the fire department and the Batavia Emergency Services and Disaster Agency.

The event also will include a vehicle extrication demonstration and informational booths from the Tri-Com Dispatch Center and the Batavia Fire Explorer Post.

Young people will have the opportunity to participate in a “Kids Firefighter Combat Challenge,” and to meet Sparky the Fire Dog.
