Conversations also are ongoing regarding the future of Charlestowne Mall, Rogina said. In December 2017, the Krausz Companies Inc. – owner of the mall, which it renamed The Quad – closed the interior shops and enclosed mall space at the center. Anchors Von Mauer and Classic Cinemas remain open.
Concept plans submitted in May 2017 included reducing the size of the mall building and building 155 townhouse units north of the mall and 256 apartment units east of the mall.
"There's conversations taking place," Rogina said. "It's one of the top three questions that are asked of me. It does frustrate me that a deal has not been struck yet. But I'm the eternal optimist."
Rogina said he is proud that St. Charles is a magnet for economic activity.
"Businesses are seeing St. Charles as a good place to establish themselves, whether it's in the industrial or commercial sector," he said.
And don't be surprised to hear a surprise announcement or two in 2019, Rogina said.
"There are a number of potential surprises, things in the works that we aren't in a position to define at this point," he said. "They haven't been before the City Council yet."
