ST. CHARLES TOWNSHIP – A resident of the 5N000 block of Middlecreek Lane, St. Charles Township, reported Jan. 10 that she was a victim of theft by deception of $5,000, according Kane County Sheriff’s reports.
The resident received an email from her boss telling her to pick up $5,000 in gift cards and email him the codes, reports stated.
She bought $500 in gift cards from Walgreens, $2,500 in Google Play cards from Best Buy and $2,000 in Google Play cards from Meijer, reports stated.
She used her company American Express credit card, for which she received permission to make such large purchases, reports stated.
She told police she received a fraud call from American Express during one of the purchases, and she verified that it was she making the purchases, reports stated.
She told police that it was not unusual for the company to present clients with gift cards, reports stated.
When she texted her boss about the purchases, it was clear to her he did not know what she was taking about and at that point, she realized something was wrong, reports stated.
The woman said she received the email communication on a laptop used for work, and had been receiving emails from her boss when she received the email asking for $5,000 in gift cards. Later she noticed it was not exactly his email address, reports stated.
She reported the fraudulent purchases to American Express and Google Play and was told they would try to intercept the cards from being used, reports stated.
Deputies advised the woman to contact her company’s IT department to let them know the work email was used, reports stated.
