North Aurora teen achieves highest rank in Boy Scouts

Cole Butler became the 183rd Eagle Scout affiliated with Aurora church

North Aurora resident Cole Butler achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in a court of honor ceremony on Jan. 19 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora, making him the 183rd Eagle Scout based out of the church.

Butler, 17, is a member of Blackhawk Troop 11 of the Three Fires Council, and a senior honors student at West Aurora High School. He plans to attend Illionis State University this fall.

In order to earn the rank of Eagle, Butler coordinated 30 scouts who set 17 new grave markers and cleaned and reset 30 existing marks of Civil War veterans in Riverside Cemetery in Montgomery iin 2016. The refurbished markers were dedicated in a ceremony on Oct. 29, 2016 at the cemetery. The Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission and Philip H. Sheridan Camp No. 2 of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War.
