Following back-to-back Montini championships, the Cadets’ Ryan Fleck earned the last of the Marmion titles with his 3-0 win over Marist returning all-state 138-pounder Jacob Dado.
“If you look at our past success, we have had multiple state champions,” Fleck said.
Nathan Callaway and Jack Bazukas made it seven state qualifiers for Marmion, as they reached the finals at 132 and 220 pounds, respectively.
After the three-day individual state tournament, Marmion will face Mt. Carmel at Sandburg in Orland Park in quest of a seventh straight team Elite Eight berth.
The Caravan handled Marmion with ease at the schools’ Catholic League regular-season dual meet, but Chumbley was one of four missing starters for the Cadets that night.
Batavia had two its six sectional representatives make the state cut.
Mikey Caliendo and Justin Major won third-place consolation finals to punch their tickets to Champaign at 138 and 152 pounds.
“I knew going in that Caliendo and Major could both get in,” Batavia coach Scott Bayer said. “Major wrestled a great tournament. He ran into a buzzsaw in Jack Stiles from Montini, who is undefeated and nationally ranked. He was just beaten by a superior wrestler.”
