Chicken restaurant slated for Randall Road

BATAVIA – Four new eateries are on the menu for Batavia this year.

They include a quick-serve chicken restaurant on Randall Road and three establishments downtown, two right next door to each other in the 100 block of East Wilson Street.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers plans to build a restaurant at the southeast corner of Randall Road and McKee Street on the former Avenue Motors property. The vacant automobile dealership building is to be demolished.

The chicken restaurant is proposing a double-lane drive-thru for the business, Batavia Community Development Director Scott Buening said.

The restaurant will occupy the acre nearest the intersection, Buening said, leaving about another seven acres for additional commercial development on the site.

Part of a national chain, Raising Cane’s will be situated directly across Randall Road from the successful Chick-fil-A restaurant.

Although the site already has the general commercial zoning classification needed, the building proposal and site plan will require a review before the Batavia Plan Commission, Buening said.

The restaurant is expected to be completed and in operation before the end of the year, Buening said.

The three downtown businesses are expected to be opening much sooner than that, he said.

Interior demolition work already is underway for Oak + Swine restaurant at 107 E. Wilson St., while plans are moving forward for Bocaditos Café right next door at 109 E. Wilson St.

Bocaditos, specializing in Argentinian cuisine, will offer carry-out service only from the storefront, owner Juliana Cancelo of Batavia said.

Cancelo has lived in Argentina and describes her business venture as a passion. The menu will feature empanadas – flaky hand-held pastries stuffed with beef, chicken or cheeses. Soups, salads, sandwiches and Argentinian deserts also will be available.

Plans are ambitious for the 107 E. Wilson St. building that will house Oak + Swine, which features craft meats.

The building will get an entirely new façade with lots of window space using a modern cement board system, while the interior is being gutted to allow for an airy two-level dining area.

Drawings from Allen + Pepa Architects of Geneva show seating for 24 people on the first floor and another 24 in a second-floor loft space.

Plans for both of the neighboring East Wilson Street business are under review, Batavia Building Commissioner Jeff Albertson said.

Meanwhile, interior remodeling work has been proceeding for Riverside Pizza and Pub at 142 W. Wilson St. in a portion of the downtown Batavia Plaza space previously occupied by the Walgreens store.

Riverside Pizza and Pub operates restaurants in St. Charles and South Elgin and plans for the Batavia expansion were announced last year.

The restaurant is taking over 5,000 square feet of space in the Plaza and is expected to open the full-service business this spring.
