Most Valuable Athlete: Josh Hudgens

Josh Hudgens
Josh Hudgens

Name: Josh Hudgens

School: Burlington Central, junior

Sport: Basketball

Why he was selected: Hudgens had a huge week for the Rockets in their two sectional games. He scored 22 points in a sectional semifinal win over Johnsburg, and had 15 in Burlington Central's 42-38 loss to Glenbard South in the sectional final.

Hudgens caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson to discuss the end of the season and his outlook moving forward for his senior year. Below is an edited transcript.

Bartelson: It really feels like you saved your best basketball for the last couple weeks of the season. What's your thought on your scoring outburst?

Hudgens: I thought I did show my best basketball at the end. I knew for my team to get far, I knew I was going to have to do my job in either category: rebounding, defense and points. I just tried to do whatever I could to get the win for my team.

Bartelson: How did you think your first year of starting at the varsity level go?

Hudgens: I think I had my ups and downs, but I was happy that I...was putting out consistent numbers the last month pretty much. [I was also] happy to do whatever I could for our team to get the win.

Bartelson: Where do you think you grew the most? Did you find a particular area of your game improve that maybe wasn't as expected?

Hudgens: I think my defense improved a lot this year. I started being able to guard more quicker guards if I had to switch on to them. And, definitely be able to contest shots better and get more blocks.

Bartelson: What's your outlook for the future?

Hudgens: I want to improve as much as I can of my game for the next year. I plan to be averaging more points and rebounds. I also want to keep developing into a better defender and athlete
