Batavia Islamic Center plans vigil for New Zealand shooting victims

BATAVIA – A community remembrance in memory of Muslims killed in mass shootings at two New Zealand mosques will be held at an interfaith prayer service at 1:30 p.m. March 22 on the west lawn of Calvary Episcopal Church of Batavia.

The event was announced by the Batavia Islamic Center. Calvary Episcopal Church is at 222 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31). For more information, contact the center at 630-841-4886.

The purpose of area vigils this week has been to stand in solidarity against terrorism and hatred against religious or other minorities.

Fifty people were killed March 15 when a gunman in New Zealand opened fire in two mosques during worship. The gunman, who has been arrested, was described as a white supremacist who was in contact with far-right organizations, according to news reports.
