North Stars make outdoors debut
The St. Charles North girls track team has two reigning Class 3A sectional champions in Nikole Custer in the long jump and Kaya Mikottis in the discus.
The North Stars’ duo made their outdoor season debut last weekend at their home invitational, a seven-team meet won by West Aurora.
Mikottis was clearly excited to perform in her specialty event as the junior is not nearly as strong in the shot put as she is in the discus.
“I was so excited, because obviously we can’t throw the disc inside,” Mikottis said of her winning effort in the discus at 114 feet. “Technically, I’m working on coming out of the back [of the ring] better. It’s more about rhythm right now, getting into it.”
Custer is making the transition to outdoor season after suffering a hamstring injury during the indoor season.
Custer skipped her specialty event in the long jump to concentrate on the 200 dash at the North Invite.
The North Stars’ junior finished fifth in the dash with a time of 27.87 seconds.
“This was my first race back,” Custer said. “I pulled my hamstring about two months ago. We decided to wait until outdoor season. That’s where the big meets are. The only reason I didn’t long jump today is because we didn’t practice it. I’m excited to start long jumping again. I am really glad to be back.”
