ST. CHARLES – Before the fireworks begin, kick off your 4th of July celebration at the Great Western Freedom 4 Run, Walk & Kids Dash to benefit Lazarus House in St. Charles.
The 13th annual event begins at 8 a.m. at LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve in St. Charles. Registration is now open at www.signmeup.com until June 30 for $30 per runner and $20 per walker.
Packet pick up starts at 6:30 a.m. for runners and walkers the day of the race. The run is a competitive 4-mile race on a USATF certified course and is part of the Fox River Trail Runners Circuit. The 2-mile walk is suited for the whole family and will start immediately after the race.
Event day registration is $35 for runners and $25 for walkers. Runner awards will be issued overall and by age groups, and new this year, awards will be given to the Best Patriotic Dressed for runners, walkers, walking teams and Kids Dash.
The Kids Dash for children 12 and under begins at 9:15 a.m. and is hosted by Hosanna! Lutheran Church and Preschool. No pre-registration is needed, and participants register at the Hosanna tent for $5 per child. Registration opens at 6:30 a.m. Participation prizes and awards are included.
According to the press release, participants are encouraged to collect pledges that benefit Lazarus House, a not-for-profit emergency shelter, center for transitional living and outreach program for men, women and children who are homeless or in crisis from Batavia, Geneva, St. Charles or western rural Kane County. Pledge forms are available with a link from the registration web page.
