St. Charles updating parking regulations to reduce problems

Aldermen unanimously approved amending ordinance regarding non-residents parking on residential streets on school days

ST. CHARLES – City leaders hope that updating the city's parking regulations will help alleviate problems that certain neighborhoods have been experiencing.

At their Aug. 19 meeting, St. Charles City Council aldermen unanimously approved amending the ordinance regarding non-residents parking on residential streets on school days. St. Charles Police Cmdr. Eric Majewski had told aldermen some streets that contain the resident parking only signage on the east and west sides were not listed in the city's ordinance.

The ordinance bans school parking on residential side streets for non-residents from the hours of 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The amended ordinance affects several streets on the east side of the Fox River, including on both sides of Muirfield Court, on the south side of Royal St. George’s Court and on both sides of Royal St. James Court.

Several streets on the west side of the Fox River are also affected, including on the east side of Chesapeake Road; on both sides of Ashbrooke Court; on the north side and east side of Greenwood Lane; on both sides of Mockingbird Court; on the north side of Oxmoor Court; on the north side of Fieldcrest Drive; on the south side of Dorchester Road; on the south side of Abbeywood Drive; on the west side of Easton Place; on the west side of Pendleton Court; on the west side of Brittany Court; on the south side of Wexford Court and on the outer ring of Windsor Court.

Several streets within the Rivers Edge subdivision, which is located near St. Charles North High School, are also included: River View Drive, River Ridge Drive, Prairie Crossing Drive, Meadow View Drive and North Meadow View Drive.

As Majewski related, residents in the Rivers Edge subdivision had requested their resident parking only time frame be extended from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to a new time of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, to be more consistent with other neighborhoods near high schools, the department recommended putting the 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. rule into effect.

In response to guests of the school using adjacent residential side streets – specifically, Meadow View Drive – District 303 and St. Charles High School North staff plan to implement their own changes in order to encourage guests to park in the lots adjacent to the football stadium behind St. Charles North High School.

In addition, a church group had been using the school's tennis courts for a large tennis league on Monday nights

"The district has been in contact with the league organizer and all of its participants will now use the school parking lots," Majewski said.
