Name: Matt Muetterties
School: Burlington Central, senior
Why he was selected: Muetterties had a monster game for the Rockets, who prevailed over Dundee-Crown 15-9 in the season opener Aug. 30. The Western Illinois commit had 12 tackles, four of them for loss. Muetterties won our reader-voted Most Valuable Athlete contest and caught up with Chronicle sports reporter Jacob Bartelson to discuss his big night.
Bartelson: Your defense gave up 14 yards on the ground. Why was the unit so successful in doing so?
Muetterties: Our defense did so well because we all swarmed to the ball and did our jobs. We played with a lot of energy, we all feed off of each others big plays.
Bartelson: Offensively, sophomore running back Gavin Sarvis did really well. What did you observe from him? What did he bring to the table?
Muetterties: Gavin is a great athlete, he finds the holes and runs hard through them. He is a great team player, and a great player all-around; big things are coming for him in the future.
Bartelson: How do you put your 12 tackle game in perspective? Is that a career-high?
Muetterties: For me, it's about the team. I did what the team needed me to do that night. As long as we get the W I'm happy. It was nice to start my first game having 12 tackles, and get a W.
