The St. Charles Public Library has experienced many changes in 2018-2019, all of which will benefit our beautiful community.
In the past year, we’ve welcomed three new trustees to our Board of Trustees; experienced a month-long One Book, One Community; purchased a vibrant new van; began an exciting partnership with District 303's The Daily Bean Coffee Shop; introduced a new Book Club Service; planted the Read & Seed Garden; and more. To see our full report to the community, visit scpld.org/annual-report-summary.
This year, our focus has been on our building renovation project. Our library board has made an $18.6 million commitment to invest in our current building, add a small addition, and completely renovate our exterior site plan. With the community in mind, we are working towards a more accessible, sustainable and efficient design for the St. Charles Public Library. If you are interested in learning more about the project, join me on our monthly behind-the-scenes tours. The next tour is scheduled for Oct. 21 at 10 a.m.
I encourage you to visit our website, scpld.org/news/library-renovation-project for more information and updates. This full renovation of our library is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2020. Our plans are to move temporarily to the recently-closed Haines Middle School on Ninth Street in St. Charles. This allows us to shorten the length of construction, save taxpayer dollars, and have a safe environment for our patrons and staff. We will have limited services available at this location while our current building is under construction. We thank the St. Charles CUSD 303 for this unique opportunity to partner and be stewards to our constituents.
Before our move to the Haines building in the spring, the Friends of St. Charles Public Library will be hosting one more book sale in October. On Oct. 25-27, visit our library to view a wide assortment of books, movies, music, video games and more during the sale. Items are reasonably priced and are perfect gifts for the upcoming holiday. All proceeds go to the Friends, who support the library by enhancing our programs or purchasing furniture or materials needed. If you are interested in joining the Friends, email firstname.lastname@example.org with a letter of interest.
Edith Craig is director of the St. Charles Public Library District. The “Discover Your Library” column runs the second Thursday of each month. Feedback can be sent to email@example.com.
