ST. CHARLES – The first production by a new professional company is the American classic “Our Town,” beautifully performed by Kane Repertory Theatre’s exceptional troupe. It will run through Oct. 19 in St. Charles.

The Pulitzer Prize winner by Thornton Wilder dates back to the 1930s and depicts life in a small community at the beginning of the 20th century, but its look at the big questions about life and death and what happens in between is as timely as ever.

In the capable hands of Paul Kassel in the role of the omniscient “stage manager” who serves as guide to life’s joys and sorrows, the audience is made privy to the personal lives unfolding in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913.

The small theater at Marquee Youth Stage, which hosts the production, is ideal for the intimate encounters with characters that audience members will come to care about. Kudos to director Daniil Krimer, who is the company’s artistic director.

The characters are movingly portrayed by skilled actors who do their magic on a staged dressed with nothing more than changing arrays of tables and chairs that carry their own import in the grand scheme of life, the universe and everything.

“Our Town” is an auspicious start for the latest addition to the TriCities’ rich cultural scene.

Starring are Elise Delap as Emily Webb, Avery Bowne as George Gibbs, Bruce Worthel as Dr. Gibbs, Carolyn Larsen as Mrs. Webb, Anne Wrider as Mrs. Gibbs and Laurie Milbourn as Mrs. Soames.

They receive terrific support from Ben Cassata, Halle Hoffman, Renique Kersh, Jayden Kersh, Joel Ottenheimer, Miles Potter and Vincent Prisco.
