We are here to help. The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is partnering with the city of Batavia and Batavia MainStreet to help businesses navigate the process of either opening a business or expanding their current business in Batavia.
A kick-off meeting took place in the City Council Chambers on Nov. 13. At the meeting, about 50 people listened – and got questions answered – as a panel of city officials explained the steps to getting a business operational in Batavia. The city of Batavia’s Community and Economic Development Department coordinated the presentation to help business owners efficiently move from the “I have a great idea” stage to hosting a ribbon cutting to tell the world that they’ve officially opened their doors.
The Seven Steps to Business in Batavia
Research & Business Plan: Get assistance, get training and reach out to helpful resources such as Waubonsee Small Business Development Center, SCORE, Fox Valley Entrepreneurship Center and the Batavia Public Library. Form Your Business: Choose the legal structure of your business and register it with State and Federal agencies. Learn whether you need any special licensing needs. Choose Your Location: Explore needs and opportunities and schedule a pre-application meeting with city planning officials. Of course, after you complete your due diligence, we hope you choose Batavia. Site Selection & Approval: Sign your contract or lease, implement zoning or occupancy changes if necessary and acquire land entitlements. Construction & Permits: This is when you might say the “rubber hits the road.” You’ll work through studying the codes, develop, design, submit and review construction plans and acquire permits for building and construction. Inspections: To get your business occupancy, you need to pass utility, fire, public health and building inspections. The city can alert you about county and state requirements, too. Once you’ve met all final verification codes and requirements, you’ll get that coveted “open for business” certification. Operation: Understand employer responsibilities, insurance, incentive opportunities and consult all the resources available. Quarterly Forums in 2020
The three partners plan to hold quarterly forums next year. The meetings will address specific business questions such as zoning, signage, liquor licensing – especially that needed for special events, as well as incentives and resources. It is likely that the overview presentation will be offered every six months for those in the beginning stages of business development.
