The St. Charles Park District offers many adventures for Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Have a Cub Scout or Girl Scout in your family? Take advantage of several unique events designed for Scouts ages 5-12 hosted by Hickory Knolls Discovery Center.

“These special events are a way for Scouts to earn and go beyond the requirements for badges through nature and science-based activities in a fun, unique setting,” said Laura McCoy, nature programs supervisor.

During Scouting Out Evening Explorers, Scouts will participate in an hour of hands-on activities revolving around a theme. From 6:30-7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 during Marshmallow Madness, Scouts will use simple machines to launch marshmallows. Then from 6:30-7:30 p.m. April 23, Scouts will have the opportunity to hunt for treasure in the natural area during Letter Boxing, following clues and hiking trails. All activities can be applied to scouting requirements.

Scouts won’t want to miss the Girl Scout Overnight on Jan. 31 or Cub Scout Overnight on March 13, which provides a winter camping experience with outdoor hikes and a campfire, but the comfort of sleeping in the warm discovery center. Scouts must bring their own sleeping bags. Dinner and a light breakfast will be served.

Additionally, an all-afternoon STEAM Scout Day will be held from 1-4 p.m. March 20 at Pottawatomie Community Center. Led by park district staff from various departments, Scouts will rotate through hands-on stations to help earn requirements.

“This Scouting event is a cohesive package with a wide variety of activities to explore all aspects of STEAM, but in ways Scouts may not be used to,” McCoy said.

For example, she said instructors will demonstrate math through dance, and dedicate time for the A for art in STEAM. Additionally, they will craft and have animal adventures.

“It will be a really fun day, with hands-on activities at every station, hitting a variety of areas from across the park district under the overarching theme of STEAM,” McCoy said.

Outside these special events, Hickory Knolls offers guided and self-guided Scout programs for dens as well. Guided programs are $50 for 15 Scouts for one-hour of staff-led programming to earn a particular badge. Self-guided programs are $15 for one day of materials and instructions for Scout leaders to use on or off site.
