Journeys- either business or personal, be prepared but be ready for change

“It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”
― Ursula K. Le Guin, “The Left Hand of Darkness”

Before you set out on any journey, you pack a bag. It might be a suitcase, or it might be a briefcase. You plan what to take and fill the bag.

In the business world, we’re all about planning our journeys. But like the saying goes, even the best laid plans go awry. So, you change. You adapt. You alter your plan – perhaps it’s a new destination so repacking your bag is necessary. Above all, embrace the journey. This won’t be the only time we talk about a journey – or luggage – in our 2020 columns, so don’t be surprised when the reference appears again.

Inspire Scholarships – A Journey in Education

In last month’s column, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce announced the launching of a new scholarship program – the Inspire Scholarships. It is our hope that these scholarships will help four Batavia High School seniors embrace change as they begin their journey into the “real world” after high school.

The four scholarships, worth at least $500 each, are motivated by the makeup of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce membership. The financial award shall be paid directly to the institute the recipient will be attending. The scholarships are:

Inspiring Entrepreneurship: A scholarship to reward a student who has interest in starting a business to encourage consideration to locate in Batavia someday.

Inspiring Women in Business: A scholarship to reward a female high school student interested in a business major to encourage more females to pursue these fields.

Inspiring Career & Technical Achievers: A scholarship to reward a high school student interested in a trade or career in manufacturing.

Inspiring Contributors to a Batavia Chamber Business: A scholarship to reward a high school student for working at a Batavia Chamber business in Batavia during high school.

Applications for any of these scholarships are currently being accepted, as are donations to grow the fund. The application must be fully completed and submitted to the Batavia Chamber by 4 p.m. April 3. Each scholarship recipient will be notified by email no later than April 17.

Nelson Mandela said, ““Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Best of luck to all applicants – we are excited that four students will pack their bags with monetary assistance as they take their next steps in their educational journey.

More Bags to Pack

We are also busy spreading the word about another journey – one to the Tuscany region of Italy. The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is joining with our neighboring chambers – Geneva and St. Charles – to sponsor a trip to awe-inspiring Tuscany from Oct. 27 through Nov. 4. Learn more about the trip at our kick-off meeting on Feb. 13. We’ll meet at Acquaviva, 35 N. Water St. in Batavia beginning at 5:30 p.m. Travelers needn’t be chamber members to join the fun – so pack your bags and join us!

Please call 630-879-7134 or email info@bataviachamber.org with any questions. Or, you are welcome to stop by to visit us at 106 W. Wilson St., Ste. 15, Batavia.
