
Beat Dad at chessCheckmate Chess Learn how to beat your Dad at chess. Each class will consist of a fun, interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both beginners and experienced players are welcome and will learn cool new strategies from a renowned Chess Scholars coach. There also will be a chess competition with prizes. Class will be from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, from March 21 through May 16, for ages 7 to 11 at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. The fee is $112 for residents and $162 for nonresidents. Beginner’s Backpacking Workshop So you want to go backpacking, but you do not know the how-to’s or the not-to’s, or the expectations. Learn about equipment such as backpacks, tents and sleeping bags. Also, topics on ethics in the backcountry, Leave-No-Trace, sanitation, menu and cooking will be presented. The workshop is for families, friends, Scouts, Scout leaders, and anyone who wants to learn about the latest in gear and how to make your first backpacking experience the best. Overnight tent camping is available to anyone. Class meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 24 at a location near Silver Springs State Park. Directions will be given at the time of registration. The fee of $58 for residents and $87 for nonresidents includes meals, handouts and campground rental fees. Tracking in the Snow and Mud Animals are out and about again. Discover which ones are on the move by learning their track patterns and other signs of activity. Class meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m. March 24 for ages 5 to 12 at Campton Hills Park, on Campton Hills Road west of Peck Road. The fee is $6 for residents and $9 for nonresidents. Parent and Me Nerf Football Are you ready for some football? This program will teach the basics of football rules, catching, throwing and flag pulling. Teamwork and sportsmanship will be emphasized. Class will be from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Saturdays, from March 24 through May 19, for ages 3 to 5 with a parent at Richmond Elementary School, 300 S. 12th St. The fee is $100 for residents and $150 for nonresidents. Parent and Me Munchkin Soccer Here is a chance to spend some time with your child and learn the basics of soccer. This program is set up to teach passing, dribbling and shooting through fun and games. Class will be from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays, from March 24 through May 19, for ages 3 to 5 with a parent at Richmond Elementary School, 300 S. 12th St. The fee is $100 for residents and $150 for nonresidents. Babysitters’ Training Future babysitters will learn the skills needed to have a successful and fulfilling time taking care of children. Fun activities, group and teacher-led discussions, and role playing allow students to participate in every aspect of the class. Student reference book and other materials included in fee. Bring a doll and lunch to class. Class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 26 and March 27 for ages 10 to 16 at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. The fee is $40 for residents and $60 for nonresidents. First Aid for Babysitters Students will learn how to identify and respond to an emergency, learn the emergency action steps, identify when and how to move an ill or injured person, and how to minimize the risk of disease transmission. Students should bring a sack lunch to class. Class will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 27 for ages 10 to 16 at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. The fee is $25 for residents and $37.50 for nonresidents. Cooking – Finger Foods This class will give participants the opportunity to try foods that don’t require any silverware. Each student will receive a cookbook at the end of class. Class will be from 1 to 2:15 p.m. March 28 for ages 7 to 9 at Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave. The fee is $15 for residents and $22.50 for nonresidents. Preservation Hall Jazz Band Start with brunch or lunch on your own at Harner’s in North Aurora. Then travel to the Paramount Theatre to be part of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s 45th Anniversary New Orleans Revue Extravaganza. Named for the venerable music venue in the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter, these musicians represent the industry’s elite. Join this music spectacular in the band’s anniversary year for a magical and timeless showcase. Trip departs at noon April 22 for adults only from the Pottawatomie Community Center, 8 North Ave., and returns at 6 p.m. Registration deadline is March 20.
