TUESDAY: New release from Metallica

James Hetfield and Metallica, the reigning titans of metal, return with their first CD since 2003, “Death Magnetic.” Produced by Rick Rubin, the CD will be the first to feature an instrumental track.

“Death Magnetic” is the first album to be released for “Guitar Hero” the same day the CD hits stores.

Undefeated Geneva will play at Yorkville

Geneva’s football team, which is coming off a 34-7 victory against St. Charles East, plays at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Yorkville. It’s one of the highlights for the third week of the prep football season.

Nealon to perform at St. Charles Zanies

Kevin Nealon, who spent nine seasons as a cast member on “Saturday Night Live” appears Friday night at Zanies at Pheasant Run in St. Charles.

Shows start at 8 and 10 p.m.

Nealon had a stint as the “Weekend Update” anchor on SNL and portrayed characters such as “Subliminal Man,” “Mr. No Depth Perception” and “Ganon, P.I., P.I.” He also has appeared in movies, including “Happy Gilmore,” “Little Nicky” and “The Wedding Singer.”  For information on Nealon, visit www.kevinnealon.com.

Sedaka to perform at Arcada Theatre

Neil Sedaka, who recorded hits such as “Calendar Girl” and “Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen,” will appear Saturday at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles.

Tickets range from $69 to $95.

The theater is at 105 E. Main St. in St. Charles.

Sox open series against Toronto

The White Sox are in the midst of a 10-game homestand that began Sept. 5 and continues all week. Wins will be crucial for the Sox this week as they try to stave off a challenge from the Minnesota Twins. After this homestand, which ends Sunday, they leave for a 10-game road trip to New York, Kansas City, and Minnesota.

TUESDAY

Hear about Geneva’s neighborhoods

Geneva History Center, 113 S. Third St., will begin the 2008-09 Brown Bag series at noon Tuesday in the community room at center.

Educator Margaret Selakovich will discuss Geneva’s interesting, but overlooked, neighborhoods. She will present an armchair version of last summer’s popular East Side Walking Tour of cottages and grand homes and stories about immigrants, pioneers, businessmen and a few scoundrels.

Check out ‘Grimm’s Grimmest’

St. Charles Heritage Center, in conjunction with St. Charles Public Library, will present “Grimm’s Grimmest: The Darker Side of Traditional Fairy Tales,” the third installment of the Thursday Evening Lecture Series, at 7 p.m. Thursday. The program will be held in the Carnegie Room at the library.

St. Charles Heritage Center operates St. Charles History Museum and Gift Shop, 215 E. Main St., and Dunham Hunt House, 304 E. Smelt fry at S. Elgin Lions Club

South Elgin Lions Club will host a smelt fry from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the club, 500 Fulton St. The DJ and music will begin at 7 p.m.

Cost is & and includes smelt, fries, cole slaw and dinner roll. Hot dogs will be free for children. A cash bar will be available with $1 drafts. Carry out dinners also will be available.

‘Les Miserables’ heads to Elgin

‘Little Mermaid’ will be in St. Charles

Steel Beam Children’s Theatre, 111 W. Main St. in St. Charles, will present a musical version of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid” on Saturdays through Oct. 18.

Resale store features kids’ clothes

Tri-Cities Mothers of Twins and Triplet club’s semi-annual resale will be 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Mooseheart Fieldhouse, Mooseheart Road and Route 31 in North Aurora. Children’s clothing, winter coats, toys, baby furniture, footwear and other infant-related equipment will be sold.

Admission is $1. Baked goods and beverages will be available for purchase.

Jewelry fair in Geneva

A jewelry fair to benefit Anderson Animal Shelter will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the American Legion, 22 S. Second St., across from Geneva Library.

More than 2,000 donated pieces of new, old, costume, fine, estate and youth jewelry and watches will be sold. Admission is a $5 suggested donation.

‘Burn After Reading’ arrives in theaters

The latest offering from Ethan and Joel Cohen, “Burn After Reading,” which stars George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich and Brad Pitt, opens in theaters. The movie tells the story of an ousted CIA official’s (Malkovich) memoir that accidentally falls into the hands of two unwise gym employees intent on exploiting their find. “Burn After Reading” is rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content, and violence.
