New: Teen out of hospital

By KATE THAYER

GENEVA – A South Elgin teen hospitalized after jumping from a moving vehicle was released from the hospital, a spokeswoman said.

Erik Nava, 17, was hospitalized late Nov. 21 after jumping from a vehicle in St. Charles Township as part of a student-created scavenger hunt list.

A Delnor Hospital spokeswoman said that Nava was sent home last night.

Nava, a St. Charles North student, had been in good condition since Nov. 28. He spent his first week in the hospital mostly in critical condition.

According to a police report, Nava had head injuries after his leap.

The incident caught the attention of State's Attorney John Barsanti who called for a special grand jury.

However, due to Nava's improved condition, Barsanti said he might call off the special grand jury. He said today that Nava has spoken with police.

Barsanti would not specify what Nava told police about the incident.

Barsanti also has said he is not sure a crime was committed but wants to be sure, and would be interested in any video footage of the incident, including cell phone recordings. Students who did not want to be named have said there is footage.

There were reportedly at least 70 to as many as 200 students involved in the scavenger hunt, which had become a tradition. Barsanti has said he was concerned with items on the list, which included jumping from a moving vehicle going 25 mph.

Nava's family could not be reached for comment this evening.
