Geneva teens charged

GENEVA – Two Geneva teenagers were charged this week after police said one helped the other elude authorities last month.

Deisi Melchor, 17, of the 1800 block of Eldorado Drive, was charged with aiding a fugitive, obstructing justice and the manufacture or delivery of marijuana.

She was released without bond and is to appear in court Jan. 20.

Joseph M. Nathan, 19, of the 900 block of Marion Avenue, was arrested on warrants for charges of forgery, theft, property damage and drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana. Sheriff's Lt. Pat Gengler said three warrants were from 2008, and one each from 2007 and 2006.

Nathan remained in Kane County Jail on Thursday with bail set at $31,000.

Police arrested the pair at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Meijer Superstore, 855 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

“We had a tip from an informant that he was at the store,” Gengler said.

Charges against Melchor stem from a traffic stop in which Nathan ran away and she told police she did not know him very well. Gengler said the two are acquaintances.

Gengler said a sheriff’s deputy stopped a Toyota Camry driven by Nathan at 7:20 p.m. Dec. 18 on Randall Road at Fargo Boulevard because its headlights were not turned on.

“The vehicle did not have headlights on after dusk as required by law,” Gengler said. “He shows the officer an Illinois ID card. Then at some point during the stop, he took off running toward Starbucks and was running through back yards. The officer never located Nathan.”

The charge against Melchor was based on information and follow-up investigating by police, Gengler said.

In July, St. Charles police charged Nathan with retail theft of a pair of sunglasses at Meijer, and possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana, according to police reports.
