Saturday's Prep Roundup: East softball team nips Burlington Central
BURLINGTON – The St. Charles East girls softball team scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 3-1 lead, then held on to defeat Burlington Central on Saturday, 3-2.
The Saints went ahead in the sixth thanks to an RBI double by Kayla Brooks and an RBI single by Pam Sommer.
East (4-3) managed six hits and six walks against hard-throwing Central ace Mackenzie Scott. Rachael Edwards went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
“I think the offensive attack at the plate was phenomenal ... it was relaxed but it was aggressive,” East coach Kelly Barnett said.
Gaby Moe (4-1) allowed only one earned win in picking up the win for East.
Marengo 7-2, Kaneland 1-0: At Maple Park, Jordan Herrow went 2-for-3 with a double in Game 2 but Kaneland (5-4) was swept in a doubleheader.
Five of Marengo’s seven runs in Game 1 were unearned.
Geneva 6, Oswego East 1: At Geneva, Melissa Barber went 3-for-3 with four RBIs to lead the Vikings (3-5) to their third straight win.
Stacey Cladis also went 3-for-3 for the Vikings, while Geneva pitcher Kristyn Ruitenberg allowed only one run and two hits while striking out eight for the win.
Freeport Tournament: West Aurora (10-4) finished third in the tournament, falling to Milledgeville, 3-0 and McHenry, 3-1, while scoring wins against Morrison and Monroe (Wis.)
BASEBALL
St. Charles East 12, Hoffman Estates 7: At Hoffman Estates, Ryan O’Dell homered, doubled and went 4-for-4 in leading East to a victory.
Zach Scott went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and Johnathan Erickson and Tom Konrad each had two hits for the Saints, with Konrad supplying a double and a triple.
Tom Laudadio pitched three innings of one-run relief to earn the win for East (2-6).
Batavia 6, Waubonsie Valley 5: At Batavia, Brian Krolikowski doubled, then advanced to third base on a balk and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bulldogs the win.
Henry DuQue doubled twice for Batavia (6-4), which gave up a two-run lead in the top of the seventh.
Kaneland 9-10, Marengo 0-3: At Maple Park, Dave Dudzinski earned the Game 1 win with six innings of no-hit ball, while Aaron Lamp struck out 14 and allowed only two hits in the Game 2 win for the Knights (8-3).
Lamp added five RBIs for the doubleheader.
Burlington Central 12-11, Geneva 8-7: At Geneva, Geneva’s Alex Sroka homered in both games of the doubleheader but the Vikings were swept.
Cory Hofstetter was 3-for-4 in Game 1, while Sroka went 3-for-4 in Game 2 for the Vikings (6-4).
West Aurora 9, Oswego 2: At Aurora, Tony Gaffino doubled and went 2-for-4 for West (4-4).
GIRLS SOCCER
West Aurora Invite: Kaneland lost a 3-0 halftime lead, falling to West Aurora, 4-3. Bridget Crosby, Emily Heimerdinger and Colleen Gebauer scored for Kaneland (2-2).
St. Francis 1, Glenbard South 0: At Wheaton, Ellie Sterner scored for St. Francis, assisted by Sydney Fox. Spartans goalkeeper Kim Gianos made eight saves.
BOYS TENNIS
Bloomington Invitational: St. Charles North finished fourth out of 16 teams in the prestigious tournament, the program’s best finish at the annual event.
The North Stars’ David Johnson and John Mittvick took third in No. 1 doubles.
German exchange student Felix Nitzsche placed sixth in No. 1 singles.
Downers Grove North Tournament: A pair of Batavia freshmen, Josh Cogan and Drew Demars, went unbeaten, helping the Bulldogs to second place out of five teams. Cogan was 3-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles, while Demars was 2-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles.
The Bulldogs’ Alex Haizman won two singles matches and a doubles match.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
St. Charles East Invite: East took third out of eight teams, finishing behind first-place Hinsdale Central and second-place Oswego.
The Saints’ Eric Coleman made the all-tournament team, registering 17 kills, 20 digs and four blocks. East’s Jeff Jones had 35 assists and Taylor Flahaven and Taylor Heavington each supplied 12 blocks.
Rolling Meadows Mustang Invite: South Elgin went 2-3 on the tournament, led by 37 kills from Andrew Gleason and 80 assists from John Kuzelka.
GIRLS TRACK
Plainfield North Tiger Relays: South Elgin finished ninth in the 14-team event, won by Minooka. The Storm’s 4x200 relay team finished on top with a time of 1:56.4.
GIRLS BADMINTON
Conant 14, Geneva 1: At Hoffman Estates, No. 3 singles player Mary Pelling was the lone winner for Geneva (1-6).
GIRLS WATER POLO
St. Charles North Invitational: St. Charles North took fourth place out of six teams. Becca Richardson and Hannah Cox were North’s leading scorers on the day.
