Saturday's Prep Roundup: Saints softball splits with Falcons
By The CHRONICLE
WHEATON – One thing separated the St. Charles East softball team from a sweep of Wheaton North on Saturday.
The Saints were unable to maintain their Game 1 approach in Game 2.
"We were really aggressive early in the counts in the first game. We were extremely relaxed and taking what the pitchers gave us," Saints coach Kelly Barnett said. "In the second game, we weren't, and that was the difference."
East won the opener, 7-2, before dropping the nightcap, 2-0.
Sophomore Rae Anne Payleitner hit her first career home run in Game 1, a two-run shot that backed winner Gaby Moe, who spaced two hits, two walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Payleitner, Kayla Brooks and Mary Kate Brooks had two hits apiece for East (7-4).
Still, the Saints struggled in Game 2, managing singles from Rebecca Reinbold, Payleitner and Mary Kate Brooks.
"We'll bounce back," Barnett said. "We've got a big local game [against Geneva] coming up on Monday."
St. Charles North 4-14, Glenbard East 1-4: At Lombard, North (6-5) swept a non-conference doubleheader to climb over the .500 mark after an 0-3 start.
