Mexican-style cheese products being recalled

The Kane County Health Department is advising residents that a Reading, Mich., firm, Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese, is recalling Asadero and Oaxaca soft Mexican-style cheese products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause Listeriosis.

Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with the products being recalled, the products were distributed to retail stores and delis in Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Alabama.

“Listeriosis is an uncommon but potentially fatal disease,” Kane County Health Department Executive Director Paul Kuehnert said. “Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. The very young, the pregnant, the elderly and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to infection. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths.”

The recalled Oaxaca cheese product was distributed in 10-pound balls, with production date 3/17/2009, and an expiration date of 5/20/2009. The Asadero was distributed in 16- and 12- ounce plastic packages, sold under the name “Aguas Calientes” Product was also sold in six-pound blocks shrink-wrapped in clear plastic, under the name “El Jaliciense.”

The Asadero recall encompasses productions dates between Aug. 1, 2008 (expiration date 10/29/2008) and Feb. 27, 2009 (expiration date 5/10/2009). Both cheese products were labeled with the name “Torres Hillsdale Country Cheese LLC.”
