ST. CHARLES – Three days ago, St. Charles East softball player Beth Carrignan delivered the game-winning hit for the Saints against Bartlett. On Friday, her sacrifice allowed Mary Kate Brooks to do the same to Lake Park.
East needed everything it could to hold off the Lancers, but a 5-4 victory against the traditional league powers kept the Saints the only unbeaten team in the Upstate Eight Conference.
"We're playing well, we're fired up, and we're not beating cupcakes, either," East coach Kelly Barnett said. "We're beating everyone ranked ahead of us."
Brooks lined a single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to put the Saints (10-4, 6-0 UEC) on top by the final margin. Katie Stengler got the win in relief of Gaby Moe, spacing one hit in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Barnett felt her team controlled the Lancers throughout the game.
"We just beat them," she said. "There's no better way to put it."
