STREAMWOOD – A timely power surge by the St. Charles East softball team pushed the Saints to a 6-3, comeback win on Monday against Streamwood.
With East trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Beth Carrignan belted a three-run home run to put East ahead, scoring Steph Roan and Kayla Brooks. After a Pam Sommer single, Rebecca Reinbold hit a two-run home run for the final margin.
In the sixth inning, Rae Anne Payleitner had hit a solo homer. In her fourth season in the program as an assistant or head coach, East coach Kelly Barnett said she can not remember more than one player homering in a season, let alone three in one game.
“That was different,” Barnett said. “But definitely fun.”
Of the three, No. 9 hitter Carrignan was the least likely candidate to go deep.
“Hitting home runs to me is a clear result of what the kids do in the offseason,” Barnett said. “Singles and doubles and even triples, a lot is about just getting good pitches to hit, but home runs come from putting the effort in, lifting the weights in the offseason.”
The rally kept East (18-6-1, 11-2 Upstate Eight Conference) atop the UEC standings.
Batavia 3, Yorkville 0: At Yorkville, Brooke Nelson threw a four-hit complete game and Katie Luetkens provided a two-run double for the Bulldogs (12-10, 6-3 Western Sun Conference).
Glenbard South 2, Geneva 0: At Glen Ellyn, Kelsey Ruitenberg was the losing pitcher in a low-scoring Western Sun Conference loss for Geneva (14-14, 5-5 WSC).
