County to consider 2nd Amendment support

GENEVA – County Board members are set to debate showing support for the right to bear arms.

During Wednesday’s Executive Committee, the board was presented a resolution supporting the 2nd Amendment, and the members will debate it at the full board meeting next week.

The resolution is a request from a gun lobbying group Illinois Pro 2A. The group claims 88 counties in the state have passed resolutions supporting the 2nd Amendment and wants Kane to do the same.

In a letter to State Rep. Linda Chapa LaVia, D-Aurora, a spokesman for the group asked that she pass on the resolution to the county.

At Wednesday’s meeting, board member Gerry Jones, D-Aurora, said he finds the resolution “unnecessary” and “insulting.”

“This, to me, is insulting,” Jones said, adding that as board members they take an oath to uphold the constitution.

“This is totally unnecessary,” he said.

Jones also said the resolution is a tactic used by the group so they can claim most of the counties in the state support their beliefs when lobbying for bills in Springfield.

“That’s how it will be interpreted,” he said.

Mike Kenyon, R-South Elgin, disagreed with Jones’ assessment.

The board will debate the resolution at its Tuesday meeting.
