Geneva opens cooling centers during record heat

GENEVA - Cooling centers are available for Geneva residents today and Wednesday as the heat is projected to reach 100 for two or more consecutive days, officials said.

The combination of high heat and high humidity can be dangerous. Especially at-risk are the elderly, infants and young children, people with disabilities and those taking medications for chronic health conditions.

Cooling centers are located:

• Geneva City Hall, 22 S. St., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
• Genva Public Works Facility, 1800 South St., 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Geneva Fire Department Headquarters, 200 East Side Drive, 24 hours, seven days a week

For questions about the cooling centers, call 630-232-7494.

Officials from the city and the Kane County Office of Emergency Management and Health Department recommends the public take additional precautions during periods of extreme heat.

These precautions include:
• Frequent well-being checks on family members and the elderly and at-risk neighbors and relatives
• Drink plenty of fluids. Those with liver or kidney disease should check with their doctors.
• Never leave children or pets alone in a closed vehicle
• Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day.
• Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat and take frequent breaks
• Stay indoors as much as possible
• Stay on the lowest level of your home out of the sun if air conditioning is not availble
• Eat balanced, light meals
• Limit alcohol
• Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothes
• Protect the face and head with a wide-brimmed hat when out in the sun
