Local job market worsened in September

The job market appeared to worsen in Kane County and throughout much of the rest of Illinois last month, according to a new round of employment numbers.
The unemployment rate in Kane edged up in September, rising to 9.9 percent from 9.7 percent in August, the Illinois Department of Employment Security reported.
In September 2008, the county's unemployment rate had stood at 5.8 percent.
Overall, the number of those counted as unemployed by the state increased by about 1.1 percent, rising from 25,913 in August to 26,220 last month. The number of unemployed is down 16.7 percent from June, when 31,491 were counted by the state as unemployed.
However, the number of Kane County residents counted by the state as employed also decreased for the third straight month, falling to 237,935 in September, a drop of 1.1 percent from August.
The September employment figures stands as the lowest monthly total of employed workers recorded by the state in the county yet this year.
Unemployment was again most rampant in the county's largest cities.
In Elgin, the state reported that 12.2 percent of eligible workers were unemployed in September, an increased from August when that city's unemployment rate stood at 11.8 percent. And in Aurora, the state said the unemployment rate was 10.7 percent, up from 10.4 percent in August.
The state also reported unemployment rates for the cities of St. Charles and Batavia.
Those numbers show that St. Charles suffered an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent, up from 8.2 percent in August and up from 4.7 percent in September 2008. In Batavia, the unemployment rate stood at 8.8 percent, up from 8.3 percent in August and 5.2 percent a year earlier.
Across the state, unemployment increased in September to 10.2 percent, up from 9.9 percent a month earlier.
