ST. CHARLES – State’s Attorney John Barsanti reminds residents that his fourth “No-Refusal Weekend” will occur during the Halloween weekend.
The “no-refusal weekends” are DUI stings that allow police to obtain warrants for offenders who refuse to submit to a breath test during a traffic stop.
Barsanti isn’t disclosing where the sting will occur but it will begin tonight into early tomorrow, and it wil start up again late Saturday into Sunday.
Local law enforcement will work with prosecutors and judges during the weekend.
Previously, Barsanti’s office has held no-refusal weekends in the Tri-Cities and in Elgin. All occurred around holidays.
The grant-funded program allows for extra patrol. If an officer pulls someone over for violating a traffic law and notices signs of drunkenness, that person will be asked to submit to a breath test.
If they refuse, prosecutors will assist police in obtaining a warrant from an on-call judge for the driver’s blood or breath sample. If the driver continues to refuse testing, they could be charged with obstruction of justice or resisting arrest, along with drunken driving.
