AURORA – Facing a quality opponent that was playing with plenty of emotion, the Rosary girls volleyball team still couldn’t be stopped.

Rosary (19-18) dominated Aurora Central Catholic in the first game, 25-10, and prevailed in the second game, 25-23, to knock off the host Chargers on Saturday in the IHSA Class 3A ACC Regional championship game.

“In the first game we really overpowered them with our serving,” Rosary coach Lisa Kasper said. “In the second game not so much. We had only one ace in the second game [compared] to four the first game.”

The game marked the return of Chargers coach Jeanne Czipri, who missed ACC’s regional semifinal while recovering from head injuries stemming from a fall on Monday.

“We have been through a lot emotionally this past week, with me being in hospital for three of the past five days,” Czipri said. “And the fact that they came out and recomposed themselves in Game 2 was testament to their mentality.”

The Chargers took the season as a building block for the future after winning the Suburban Christian Gold Division.

“Coach Czpiri told us that we should be proud of this year and that we came from nothing last year to so much this year, and to hold our heads up,” ACC’s Ashley Wilk said.

For Rosary, Emily Weber had five kills and eight service points, Amelia Wegman has eight kills and six service points and Lindsay Juriga had seven assists and four kills.

Kendra Bradley (12 digs), Vivian Fitzgerald (10 digs, two kills) and  Natalie Steinwart (nine assists) boosted ACC, which had a school best 25 wins this season.

The Royals’ next opponent is No. 1 Joliet Catholic Academy in Tuesday’s St. Francis Sectional semifinal.

“Joliet Catholic is tough and we will play them as hard as we can, and I hope for the best” Weber said.
