ST. CHARLES — A West Chicago man is in custody at the Kane County Correctional Facility after police said he entered a St. Charles apartment uninvited on Saturday and grabbed the responding police officer by the throat.

Francisco A. Felix-Moreno, 26, of the 1200 block of Kings Circle, West Chicago, was charged with three felonies: obstructing a peace officer, criminal trespass to a residence and aggravated battery to a peace officer, according to the St. Charles Police Department.

His bond was set at $50,000 on Sunday.

A resident of the 1600 block of Indiana Street called police at about 6 p.m. after the resident said Moreno walked into the apartment. He gained entrance by an unlocked door, police said.

A man, his wife, their two young children and another relative were home.

The resident told Moreno to leave, police said, but Moreno ignored the requests and began to walk around the apartment. Police said the resident was able to grab a bottle of beer Moreno was holding and eventually lured him from the apartment before calling authorities.

Police department spokesperson Paul McCurtain said the resident handled the situation well.

"He remained calm and was able to talk with the offender and able to get him out of the residence," McCurtain said.

As the resident was talking with police outside the apartment building, the resident spotted Moreno. Moreno attempted to flee and enter another apartment building when first approached by the officer but later stopped and provided identification, police said.

Police arrested Moreno after he tried to take his ID card from the officer. Moreno then grabbed the officer by the throat and began choking him, police said.

The officer repeatedly struck Moreno in the head until he released his grip, police said. The officer then handcuffed Moreno and took him into custody.

Moreno received treatment at Delnor Hospital for facial injuries. The officer also received treatment there for an injury to his left hand. McCurtain said the officer suffered from ligament damage to his left thumb.

Authorities do not know why Moreno entered the apartment or grabbed the officer.

"I don't know if we ever will, unless he brings it up in court later on," McCurtain said.
