ST. CHARLES — An East Side couple called authorities Wednesday after becoming suspicious of a man who entered their home by claiming he worked for a cable TV company, St. Charles police said.
The couple, of the 3000 block of Royal Queens Court, told St. Charles police a man wearing a Comcast ID badge came to their house at about 10 a.m., Sgt. Brad Griffin said. The man said he had to photograph work or repairs done inside, police said.
He reportedly walked around the house before leaving in an older model light gray or silver compact car, police said.
The couple contacted police because Comcast had not done work on their house recently. Griffin said the call came in at about 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The couple reportedly spoke to Comcast, who told them nobody was scheduled to visit their house, Griffin said.
Griffin could not say with certainty whether the man was a Comcast employee.
"We don't know that he was; we don't know that he wasn't," Griffin said. "It's suspicious, but there's been no negative impact at this point."
Police have received other calls from people with similar concerns, Griffin said. He noted Comcast's many employees and contractors makes it difficult to confirm a person's employment and said getting confirmation from the company is not always instantaneous.
In this type of situation, Griffin said, people should call 911 and Comcast before allowing the visitor inside.
Suspicious person description
The man, who was carrying a camera, was described as white, clean-cut and about 50 to 60 years old with gray, balding hair. He wore glasses and a Comcast ID on a chain around his neck, St. Charles police said.
