BATAVIA – Sugar Grove resident Vicki Ryan knows that now is not the best time to open a business.
At the same time, she knows that people are on the lookout for bargains these days. To meet that demand, she has opened R Kids Closet, a children's clothing consignment store, at 63 N. Randall Road in Batavia.
"Everything is affordable," Ryan said. "You can get a pair of Abercrombie jeans for $13."
The store sells clothing for babies up to teens.
R Kids Closet will hold its grand opening at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10. From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. that day, customers will receive 10 percent of any merchandise in the store.
The store marks a new direction for Ryan, who was previously in the mortgage business.
"I wanted to do something for myself and make my own destiny," Ryan said.
Ryan, 39, knows how expensive children's clothing can be. She has two young daughters.
The store sells "gently worn" clothing brought in on consignment.
"They can receive up to 40 percent of what it sells for," Ryan said.
If an item hasn't sold after 90 days, they can pick it up or the store will donate it to the Batavia Interfaith Clothes Closet.
Batavia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Roger Breisch toured the new store, which opened for business on Oct. 1.
"It's nicely done," Breisch said. "I was very impressed with the way the store looks."
If R Kids Closet is a success, Ryan said she would like to start a chain of stores and branch out into selling household items as well.
"That's something that I would love to do," Ryan said.
