BATAVIA — Several workers at a Batavia factory had to receive emergency medical treatment after smoke from a small fire filled the facility on the city's east side Monday morning.
Batavia firefighters responded to a report of a fire at about 8:30 a.m. in the Power Packaging facility in the 1200 block of Raddant Road, located south of Fabyan Parkway and west of Kirk Road.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire smoldering inside the ventilation system of a device called a powder packaging machine. Such machines typically are used for packing powdery or loose products into packages.
Firefighters also found smoldering embers inside a hopper system for the machine, according to a release from the Batavia Fire Department.
Firefighters then dismantled the machine and the ventilation system to completely extinguish all of the embers.
In all, 29 firefighters in six firefighting trucks responded to the scene.
The fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes and firefighters had left the scene by 10:40 a.m.
Three Power Packaging employees were treated on the scene for what the Batavia department called "inhalation issues." They were released at the scene.
Firefighters believe the fire was caused by a build-up of powder in the machine's ventilation system.
Damage was estimated at $20,000.
