Kane County, including St. Charles, is proving irresistible to a large number of Cook County residents. In fact, the number of people moving from Cook to Kane is among the largest in the nation, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Between 2007 and 2011, the latest figures available, 4,786 people moved from Chicago’s Cook County to Kane County. That ranks among the top 25 shifts in population from one county to another in the nation.

And 900 of those movers had at least a bachelor’s degree, the Census reported.

An even greater number of Cook County residents moved to DuPage Country, which includes a portion of St. Charles. During the period, 8,419 left Cook to find new homes in DuPage, the seventh largest population shift in the country. And 3,827 of those movers had at least a bachelor’s degree.

Nationally, the largest population migration occurred from Los Angeles County to San Bernardino County in California, with 20,672 people moving, followed by 14,248 moving from Los Angeles County to Riverside County, Calif.

Other counties seeing the largest population shifts during the period include Miami-Dade County, Fla., to Broward County, Fla., which includes Ft. Lauderdale; Wayne County, Mich., which includes Detroit, to Oakland County, Mich.; Los Angeles County to Orange County, Calif., which includes Anaheim; New York County to Bronx County, N.Y.; Kings County, N.Y., where Brooklyn is located, to Queens County, N.Y.; Dallas County to Denton County, Texas; Wayne County to Macomb County, Mich.; and Orange County, Calif., to Riverside County, Calif.

Major population migrations also include moves from Los Angeles County to Kern County, Calif., which includes Bakersfield; Harris County, Texas, which includes Houston, to Montgomery County, Texas; Fulton County, Ga., which includes Atlanta, to DeKalb County, Ga.; Harris County to Fort Bend County, Texas; Nassau County, N.Y., to Suffolk County, N.Y.; Washington, D.C., to Prince George’s County, Md.; Cook County, Ill., to Lake County, Ind.; Alameda County, Calif., which includes Oakland, Calif., to Contra Costa County, Calif.; Baltimore, Md., to Baltimore County, Md.; San Francisco County to San Mateo County, Calif.; Philadelphia County, Penn., to Montgomery County, Penn.; Queens County to Nassau County; and Dallas County to Tarrant County, Texas.
